Here’s how we led up to our “Big Ask” yesterday.
At the end of the sermon, seven of our young worshippers came out on the platform carrying large photos of children from around the world who have been victims of human trafficking.
We told the stories of the global children through an audio presentation written by Chris Macedo and narrated by Marcy Smith.
As the moment neared its conclusion and the background music gained in intensity, Marcy gave the “reveal”: “thanks to the work of the International Justice Mission, the children pictured AND the children holding the pictures now share one precious thing in common — FREEDOM.”
Then our Good Shepherd children turned their photos around to reveal the word FREEDOM spelled out on bold letters.
We moved into “He Reigns” and “Chosen Generation” and people poured up to the altar to offer their financial gifts to our project.

We were so sorry to miss it! Well… how much money was given so far? We’re eager to hear!
I don’t know about the 8:30 or 10 services but 11:30 was powerful. I was given a heads up that the service would be emotionally powerful (alluding to the photos and the “Freedom” reveal) but I was in one of those “Yeah Right” kind of moods. Not disbelieving, just not expecting to be moved the way the friend described. The music was good, appropriate and well led by the band and choir. Your sermon was spot on (I love how you break it down for people in various situations, not just one catch all “give”) and then the photos and the Freedom reveal and watching generosity in action. I am so glad to be a part of a church like this.
Carmen —
I’d love to tell! It’s a phenomenal amount so far. We’ll give the entire results on Jan. 2, 2011.
I loved how, at the 8:30 service at least, as soon as the music started during the time to donate, most of the room immediately went to front to donate. That simple gesture of kindness for those children around the world brought tears to my eyes. 🙂
You should have warned people to bring tissues along with their checkbooks!
Great job, Talbot!
