I Like Duke

March 31, 2010 14

I didn’t go there for college or seminary.

No one in my family went there.
Most people want them to lose.
But to the extent I follow college basketball and the Final Four (moderate), I want Duke to win it all.
Is it because some people say I look like Coach K?
Is it because some of my best preacher friends did in fact go to divinity school there?
Is it because it’s somewhere in North Carolina?
Is it because I’ve liked them ever since the 1978 team came out of oblivion and into prominence, advancing to the title game before losing to Kentucky?
Is it because they last won in 2001, led by Shane Battier?
Is it because when they beat Baylor last weekend, the Methodists finally beat the Baptists?
Its’ a little bit of all of those.
In the middle of an Easter crush weekend, I’ll be pulling for Duke to win it all.
Don’t hate me for it.

I trust you don’t scowl like Coach K. That’d be scary!

No more spots for you at the Y

    I KNEW I should have kept this a secret . . .

  • Don Lail says:

How do you get a Duke grad off your front porch? Pay him for the pizza.

  • Talbot Davis says:

    Don –
I’m surprised yours wasn’t the FIRST comment of the day!

Anyone else notice the similarity between Talbot’s new photo and the one of Coach K?

  • Anonymous says:

They use the same hair stylist. It’s a long drive for one of them.

Sorry Talbot. As you know, I am a State grad and unfortunately have to work for a living. I do not have copious amounts of free time to blog!

  • Well, Talbot… As a Kentucky Grad this is hard to take. It is hard being a UK fan in the Carolinas! I will forgive you for being a Duke fan.

  • Talbot Davis says:

Does it helped that I lived in Kentucky for three years? Of course, it was the bleak era of probation — the end of Eddie Sutton and the beginning of Rick Pitino.

  • Marlin says:

We are ecstatic that you Love Duke also. Ralph and I are very happy that they won. Go Methodists!

Now that we see the resemblance in the photo, we are sure that is the number one reason that we like you so much. Originally we were leaning towards the fantastic sermons.

Oh, Talbot..I won’t hate you for liking Dook but I’ll do my best to forgive you. 😉 I lived in Lexington when Kyle Macy played for UK and watched the Wildcats play in Rupp Arena many times. And I graduated from UNC in ’93. God’s a Tar Heel fan because He made the sky Carolina blue.

  • Talbot Davis says:

    Kyle Macy! Man.

We went to Rupp in 1989 I think it was. It was an imposing venue even in Kentucky’s down years.

That’s also where we saw Bruce Springsteen!

Never stepped foot in Rupp Arena, but did attend the University of Tennessee when Coach Ray Mears in his ghastly orange plaid pants tried valiantly in the very early 1970s to beat the legendary UK coach after whom the Arena is named. Yes, I must admit, we wore some hideous stuff during that decade, which That 70s Show depicted quite well. Anyway, must admit that the greatest shot against the Wildcats was made by Christian Laettner in that last-second turnaround classic!
