Good Shepherd
Christian Hedonism
November 13, 2009 at 7:00 am 2
I love that title, I have to admit.

Inspired by an unlikely source, it speaks to the motivation of the Macedonian Christians in 2 Corinthians 8.

I cannot wait for this message.

Ever since I came to understand the nature of Christian hedonism and how it relates to The Treasure Principle, I have had something I have been over-the-top eager to share with the people of Good Shepherd.

So I'm in countdown mode.

Until Sunday.

What Happens In The Corner Campus
November 9, 2009 at 8:30 am 1
We showed this towards the end of my sermon yesterday. It gives a glimpse of the kind of life-giving ministry happening in our Corner Campus:

Take a special look at the student in the UCLA T-Shirt -- that's my son Riley.

What I appreciate most about our efforts to open up that space: many people gave to the project who don't have teenagers.

Sacrificial giving to a ministry from which they receive no direct benefit.

That's the heart of The Treasure Principle.

The Treasure Principle
November 6, 2009 at 9:23 am 1

Every time we finish a series, I have a sense of grief. Usually, I'm not sure we can live up to what we just did with the next one.

That's how I felt after Still. And after Piece Of Work. And after Rubber, Meet Road. And after The Fight Of Your Life.

But each time, it seems, God comes through and takes our meager preparation and does something bigger than we expected with it.

So even though I'm going to miss The Fight Of Your Life (and preaching from a boxing ring!), as we move into the Treasure Principle I am confident God will magnify himself through our efforts.

It's a series about priorities, perspective, money, and eternity. It's based on Randy Alcorn's book of the same name, though while I was preparing the messages God kept sending me in unexpected directions.

So I pray he'll do something unexpected in your life and mine through what we do.

It starts with a message called "The Treasure Principle." Kind of like the title song on an album.

Sunday.

8:30. 10. 11:30.

U DA MAN
November 2, 2009 at 9:07 am 2

Few things are more annoying than the phrase "U da man!"

Except when some guy answers with, "No, U da man!"

(Well, maybe it's more annoying when at a golf tournament someone calls out, "Get in the hole!" . . . after a tee shot. Do you think it's always the same guy saying the same dumb thing?)

Anyway, why would we name a Men's Retreat after such an annoying phrase?

Because how else could we build a retreat around a great picture like the one on the left?

Yet there's another reason.

We want to give the men of Good Shepherd an experience that moves them away from the false bravado of "U Da Man!" and into the authentic strength of being God's man.

So on November 20-22 we're designing an experience of men, for men, and by men. A time soaked in prayer and also filled with freedom. A weekend up at Camp Harrison in the foothills of western North Carolina -- a time to escape what is false and enter into what is genuine.

I'm going to be there and so will the guys from our staff team.

The Knockout Punch
October 30, 2009 at 9:13 am 0

This photo of Muhammed Ali's knockout of Sonny Liston in their May, 1965 rematch bout in Lewiston, Maine is one of the most iconic images in all of boxing.

Liston prone. Ali flexing and snarling. I saw the photo as a kid -- and Ali fan -- and have never forgotten it.

And a debate that rages even today: was the knockout punch real or phantom? Was Ali's speed and strength such that Liston had no chance? Or was the fix in and Lison took the fall to pay back debts he owed to the Mafia?

Such is the power and allure of knockout punches -- the ultimate winner-take-all moment in sports.

As we wind up The Fight Of Your Life, we'll look closely at the knockout punches that our family relationships face, and those that we can give in order to win the battle. To get ready, take a look at Ruth 1:1-21.

And remember to turn your clock back on Saturday night.

Sunday. 8:30. 10. 11:30.
