Top Five Tuesday — Top Five Things I’ve Learned From Watching TV Recently
September 11, 2012 at 1:00 am 1
Because the last couple of weeks have included the conclusion of the US Open tennis tournament and the launch of both college and NFL football, I've watched a bit more television than usual.

It's amazing what you can learn by watching television if you pay close attention.

Here are the top five things I've learned recently:

5.  That all of us experience an inexplicable tiredness at precisely 2:30 p.m.

4.  That after a long weekend of drinking beer, people are still young, thin, and beautiful.

3.  That both Barack Obama and Mitt Romney have secret plans to destroy the United States.

2.  That every problem a man has is due to low testosterone.

1.  That somewhere in this world there are side-by-side, his-and-hers, outdoor bathtubs.

Lowlife Launch Recap
September 10, 2012 at 6:44 am 0
John Pavlovitz started our Lowlife series with a strong message from John 13.

John excels at both wordsmithing and delivery.  Here are some of the highlights from yesterday's message:

  • Serving doesn't lead to a reward.  Serving IS the reward.
  • [Reminding our church of the Sunday we packed 193,000 meals for Uganda] You all became the message without listening to one.
  • We enter into a lowlife so that others will be lifted up.
  • Sadly, many of us end up chasing the life that Jesus doesn't even want for us in the first place.
One of the "high"lights of Lowlife is that we are offering special serving opportunities every Saturday during September as a way of encouraging the people of the church to live into the message.

This Saturday (Sept. 15), the options include preparing and serving lunch at the Charlotte Rescue Mission or washing feet & providing shoes to under-resourced children through our friends at the Neighborhood Good Samaritan Center.

To be part of either Lowlife ministry, come to Good Shepherd this Saturday at 9:00 a.m.

Lowlife Week One — “I’ll Take The LOW Road”
September 7, 2012 at 1:00 am 0

Humility: You won't get awards for it. You won't receive promotions for it.

You won't win a reality TV show with it.

But the Bible tells us that it is the path to greatness in the eyes of God.

The smaller we get, and the more important we make others, the closer we are

to the heart of Christ.

Submitting to God.

Serving others.

Sacrificing self.

This is how we get LOW.

"I'll Take The LOW Road"

Sunday.

8:30.  10.  11:30.

Disney Trams And Sermon Design
September 6, 2012 at 6:16 am 0
If you've ever been to one of the Disney theme parks, you know what this picture is all about.

You enter the Disney property, park about three miles from the park entrance, and then the tram stops by your car to pick you up.

That's what the tram does (not on its own, mind you; it usually has a driver):  it circles the parking lot, picking up passengers at their different beginning points, and then carries them to a common destination.

Picking people up where they are and then carrying them as a community to a common destination.

That's exactly what happens in the opening moments of a sermon.

The preacher makes different points of connection with different segments of the congregation, gets them on board with his argument/dilemma/situation, applies biblical truth to the subject under discussion and then VOILA! helps the community arrive at a common destination together.

That's why those opening moments of any message are so critical.  People either get on board or check out.

People don't need to know what you're going to tell them in those first few minutes.

They instead need to know you understand where they've parked that day.

Living The Sermon Before I Ever Preached It
September 5, 2012 at 1:00 am 0
I had the most interesting encounter after the 11:30 service this past Sunday.

The message dealt with the relationship between church & state and between Christian & government.

The bottom line came from Philippians 3:20 -- But your citizenship is in heaven -- and reminded people throughout the message that the government may have your cooperation but it can never have your citizenship.

Along the way, I warned of the dangers of trusting in political saviors -- we already have One, thank you very much, and He can't be added to or improved upon -- as well as the need for Christians & churches always to keep political parties and candidates at arm's length.  The state/government/party will take as much of you as you will allow, I said, and we who follow Jesus have a prior claim on our highest allegiances.

Anyway, after the third service, a man who is from Cuba came to speak to me.  In halting English, he told me of how he used to serve in the Cuban army.  Then one day a superior officer ordered him to join Fidel Castro's Communist Party.  My friend refused, stating that he could not declare his allegiance to the Party -- which holds to atheism as its official religion -- because he had given his body and soul to Christ.

"What happened when you said 'no'?" I asked.

By way of reply, my new friend pulled out the dental bridge from his upper lip and revealed a gaping hole.  "They knocked my teeth right out," he said.

Wow.

Then he finished:  "I GOT your sermon today."

Actually, he GOT my sermon a long time ago.
